La Bursch stands in Campiglia Cervo — more precisely, in the hamlet of Oretto. In his historic book dedicated to these very lands, the scientist and humanist Massimo Sella captured the emotional topography of our Cervo Valley through passages of rare poetry, such as the one quoted above.
It is from the Germanic-Alpine word Bürsch — meaning literally “home,” “den,” or “little homeland”—that the identity of this valley takes shape, setting it clearly apart across the entire Alpine arc.
What makes the Cervo Valley unique is an extraordinary history built upon Syenite, a prized, dark granitic stone quarried for centuries from famous local sites. Thanks to the mastery of generations of stonemasons and master builders—renowned across Europe and the world for their craft—the valley gave rise to hamlets and architecture, much like La Bursch itself, of rare and timeless elegance.
The result, visible to this day, is a living land rich in cultural influences, yet cradled in the shadow of its mountains. Our home was born right here, in the heart of these slopes: it gathers within its walls a memory that now translates into hospitality, driven by the desire to be shared with as many people as possible.
Stepping into the heart of the Cervo Valley—historically known as the Valle dell’Acqua for the relentless, generous flow of streams, springs, and waterfalls that have shaped its landscape and life over the centuries—means embarking on a journey through unique villages, each a testament to a centuries-old bond between mankind, stone, and mystery.
Following the stream upstream leads to Rosazza, widely regarded as one of Italy’s most enigmatic and fascinating villages. Envisioned in the late nineteenth century by the senator and philanthropist Federico Rosazza, the town is a striking open-air museum of esoteric and Masonic architecture: fairytale towers, talking fountains, alchemical symbols carved into local stone, and the famous Castle with its Guelphic Gate carry visitors into an atmosphere suspended between legend and spiritual quest.
Continuing toward the sources of the Cervo stream, the valley culminates in Piedicavallo, the final settlement nestled in the presence of great Alpine peaks. Here, among cobbled alleyways and sturdy syenite houses crafted with rare mastery, one feels a sense of genuine mountain peace—the ideal starting point for historic mule tracks and trails ascending toward high-altitude refuges and the glacial waters of Parco della Cestina and Lago della Vecchia.

Just a short distance from our home lies Oasi Zegna, a free-access natural park spanning over 100 km², born in the 1930s from the visionary mind of entrepreneur Ermenegildo Zegna. A grand project of landscape conservation, it culminates in the famous Rhododendron Basin—a site protected by the FAI—and is traversed by the Panoramica Zegna, a high-altitude balcony suspended between the Alps and the Po Valley.
Yet the Panoramica Zegna is not the only scenic route cherished by the locals: one must also travel along the Tracciolino, the spectacular high-altitude road that winds through alpine pastures and ancient beech forests. Likewise suspended over the Biellese Alps and the vast Po Valley, the Tracciolino connects the Cervo Valley to the neighboring Elvo Valley, offering breathtaking views in every season.
Our landscape extends beyond stone and forest, serving as a significant crossroads of spirituality. From the tranquility of our Cervo Valley, home to the historic Sanctuary of San Giovanni d’Andorno — the only Alpine place of worship dedicated to Saint John the Baptist—the path of faith and art leads to the majestic Sanctuary of Oropa. A monumental complex of breathtaking beauty, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site, Oropa stands as the supreme testament to how human devotion can blend seamlessly with the depth of the mountains.
The Biella territory harbors a noble culinary tradition deeply and passionately rooted in its origins, which La Bursch reinterprets with mastery and elegance. The Cervo Valley is the cradle of a refined high-altitude cheesemaking culture, where the age-old knowledge of local herdsmen translates into raw-milk excellence, such as the renowned Toma Biellese DOP and the rare, prized Maccagno.
This same alpine character shines through in the region’s most comforting and soul-warming traditional dishes, starting with the iconic Polenta Concia, skillfully whipped with mountain butter and local cheeses.
